Answers Concerning Prophecies and things future #14
Tarshish
Tarshish seems to have been a name of somewhat general import in ancient days. There were certainly two places bearing the name — one in the east, reached by ships which sailed from Ezion-gaber, on the Red Sea, and the other in the west to which ships sailed from Joppa, the modern Jaffa.
Several suggestions have been made as to the identity of the latter. Cyprus, Tartessus (in Spain, adjoining and including Gibraltar), the Scilly Islands, and Britain* itself, have been looked upon as the Tarshish of the west. With regard to the eastern Tarshish, its products, gold, silver, ivory, apes and peacocks (2 Chron. ix. 21) are all Indian merchandise, the very names for them being allied to the Sanscrit — the language of India.

Editorial note:
Not all Bible students, Bible Researchers and Christadelphians do agree with the 19th/20th vision of Great-Britain being the Tarshish of the West. We want to let our readers know those matters are just opinions and never have to be considered as prophetic visions or essential parts of the faith.
