The Dead — Where Are They? 25 The Second Death

The Second Death

In the Garden of Eden, death was pronounced as the penalty for the transgression there committed, and the whole of the Adamic race was involved in it. This was the unfortunate result of the first great Judgment of our race. — Rom. 5:12,16.

“ Wherefore, as by one man sin entered into ye world, and death by sin, and so death went over all men: in whom all men have sinned.” (Ro 5:12 GenevaBible)

“ Neither is the gift so, as that which entered in by one that sinned: for the fault came of one offence unto condemnation: but the gift is of many offences to justification.” (Ro 5:16 GenevaBible)

Another Judgment Day has been appointed, because the Son of God tasted death for every man, thus purchasing the entire race, and having the right to put each individual of the race on trial for life, with the alternative of death to the wilfully disobedient. (1 Peter 1:18,19; 1 Cor. 6:20; Rom. 5:15,18-19; 1 Cor. 15:21,22; Acts 17:30-31; 3:23.)

The death which is a possibility of this great Judgment is called the Second Death. Whereas the possibility of complete deliverance from the Adamic penalty is to be put within reach of all because of the Redeemer’s death, there is no hope of release for those who may be condemned to the Second Death; it will be final, because non will be sentenced to it until after it has been determined that the character is wilfully opposed to God and righteousness. A thousand thousand retrials would not alter such a case; therefore none will be granted.

The Judgment which has for its alternatives eternal life and eternal death is going on now, in some cases.
Each one who has been enlightened comes under a measure of responsibility, and some who have enjoyed a great deal of light are thereby brought, under very much responsibility, so that wilfulness on their part would involve them in utter destruction without hope of remedy. (Heb. 1:1,2; 2:2,3; 6:4-6; 10:26-31; 12:25; Acts 3: 23,26.)

“1  At sundry times and in diverse manners God spake in the old time to our fathers by the Prophets: in these last days he hath spoken unto us by his Son, 2 Whom he hath made heir of all things, by whom also he made the worlds,” (Heb 1:1-2 GenevaBible)

“2 For if the word spoken by Angels was steadfast, and every transgression, and disobedience received a just recompense of reward, 3 How shall we escape, if we neglect so great salvation, which at the first began to be preached by the Lord, and afterward was confirmed unto us by them that heard him,” (Heb 2:2-3 GenevaBible)

“4 For it is impossible that they which were once lightened, and have tasted of the heavenly gift, and were made partakers of the holy Ghost, 5 And have tasted of the good word of God, and of the powers of the world to come, 6 If they fall away, should be renewed again by repentance: seeing they crucify again to themselves the Son of God, and make a mock of him.” (Heb 6:4-6 GenevaBible)

“26 For if we sin willingly after that we have received and acknowledged that truth, there remaineth no more sacrifice for sins, 27 But a fearful looking for of judgment, and violent fire, which shall devour the adversaries. 28 He that despiseth Moses Law, dieth without mercy under two, or three witnesses: 29 Of how much sorer punishment suppose ye shall he be worthy, which treadeth under foot the Son of God, and counteth the blood of the Testament as an unholy thing, wherewith he was sanctified, and doeth despite the Spirit of grace? 30 For we know him that hath said, Vengeance belongeth unto me: I will recompense, saith the Lord. And again, The Lord shall judge his people. 31 It is a fearful thing to fall into the hands of the living God.” (Heb 10:26-31 GenevaBible)

“ See that ye despise not him that speaketh: for if they escaped not which refused him, that spake on earth: much more shall we not escape, if we turn away from him, that speaketh from heaven.” (Heb 12:25 GenevaBible)

“ For it shall be that every person which shall not hear that Prophet, shall be destroyed out of the people.” (Ac 3:23 GenevaBible)

“ First unto you hath God raised up his Son Jesus, and him he hath sent to bless you, in turning every one of you from your iniquities.” (Ac 3:26 GenevaBible)

Even a small degree of enlightenment is not to be trifled with. Let us therefore be very careful that we be rightly exercised by the divine mercies. — Rom. 12:1; 2 Cor. 5:14,15.

“I Beseech you therefore brethren, by the mercies of God, that ye give up your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable serving of God.” (Ro 12:1 GenevaBible)

“14 For that love of Christ constraineth us, 15 Because we thus judge, that if one be dead for all, then were all dead, and he died for all, that they which live, should not henceforth live unto themselves, but unto him which died for them, and rose again.” (2Co 5:14-15 GenevaBible)

Second Death does not necessarily imply dying twice. When Jesus returns, at the Endtimes, there shall still be several people alive after the Big Battle or Armageddon. Not all adversaries of God might have been killed. From those who survived and also from the children who would be born in the millennium, they would not be tested but only after the end of the thousand years.

Thus is shown the fact that, the significance of “second” as attached to this death is not in the number of times the transgressor dies, but in that it is the condemnation which may be pronounced as a result of the second great Judgment.

Throughout the book of Revelation (Rev. 2:9,13 ; 12:3,9,12; 20: 2,7,10) the name “Satan” is applied to a political system, of which we hope to say more on another occasion. In Rev. 20:20, this “Satan” system is mentioned with two other systems (“Beast” and “False Prophet” — Rev. 19:20) as being tormented forever and ever in the lake of fire and brimstone, which is the Second Death.

“ But ye beast was taken, and with him that false prophet that wrought miracles before him, whereby he deceived them that received ye beasts mark, and them that worshipped his image. These both were alive cast into a lake of fire, burning with brimstone.” (Re 19:20 GenevaBible)

The “Beast” and “False Prophet” are cast into the burning lake at the end of the Gospel age; the “Satan” system at the end of the Kingdom age. Since systems have no nerves, they cannot feel pain; this passage must there- fore be viewed as strongly figurative, describing the severe dealings of the Lord with all systems of evil, looking to their utter destruction.
