Bible in the first place #1/3

Bible, Word of God, God-breathed Scriptures, valuable for teaching the truth, convicting of sin, correcting faults and training in right living;  feeder of wisdom.

As Bible researcher you perhaps could say I am predisposed and all my findings would be biased because I do believe that God has spoken in history, and that by inspiration the Bible is the authoritative deposit of that word for all time. Partiality could be called for, in case I would clinch to certain Christian believes, brought forward by one or other denominational church. But as researcher one has always to look at things impartially. As such I want to stay fair to everything what comes in front of my eyes. I love to look at all those writings, ideas, findings and objects with a detached view.

Though I do agree I came already to the subjective choice that I consider the Word of God, as presented in the Holy Scriptures, as the main Work which can feed us with the necessary wisdom.

“16 All scripture \@is\@ given by inspiration of God, and \@is\@ profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness: 17 That the man of God may be perfect, thoroughly furnished to all good works.” (2 Timothy 3:16-17 KJBPNV)

“For whatever things were written aforetime were written for our learning, that we through patience and comfort of the scriptures might have hope.” (Romans 15:4 KJBPNV)

Trip in the unknown

I continued my voyage many years ago not totally from scratch, but I was prepared to put all the things which I had learned to put aside, and be gone with the many dogma’s I had learned in childhood. Beginning from a blanc page I continued in what I learned on the way, like many people did in the first century of our common era. Going along a difficult track I could find many answers in the Bible which I ought to follow instead of human teachings. I found those Words in the Holy Scriptures to be true. I confess that from infancy I have known the Holy Scriptures. But I had to experience how they could influence my life. No matter which way some people wanted me to go, I felt that the Word of God was much stronger than that of people. Common man is nothing against the Most High Almighty God. It are His Words that gave me the power to continue my exploration in the jungle of different faiths. In my search, eagerly to be willing to find out more, I felt more and more the guidance of the Holy Scriptures. I came to the believe that they have the power to give us wisdom so that we can be saved through faith in Christ Jesus.

Equipped to grow by Old Writings

The Words of God equip God’s servants so that they can grow in knowledge, can change their own personality and that they are completely prepared to do good things.

When the apostle  Paul wrote his letter about the influence of the Word of God in the Scriptures, he was talking about the whole of the Old Testament. Normally those old writings would be sufficient to give us all knowledge, but the writings of him and that of the other disciples of Christ Jesus, brought us more information and some explanation of the old writings, so that people after the man Jesus from Nazareth, could have no excuse any more, that they could not come to an understanding because they had not enough material available to come to insight.

All the old writings brought to us by prophets and god inspired people were as it says: θεοπνευστος theopneustos. (God-inspired) Meaning that those words were  from θεος, God, and πνεω, to breathe, to breathe out. Like God breathed into the nostrils of Adam the breath of life, He gave breath of life to His Words which lingered over His chosen people Israel. The Scriptures of the prophets who were taught according to the inspiration of God, κατα τ ην επιπνοιαν την απο του θεου became part of historical writings we are now able to find in many languages. Those translations make it that much more people can find the Word of God in their own native language, so that they shall be able to understand it much easier.

Many people though do think the Bible is the New Testament. They forget the Old Testament, which is the biggest part of the Holy Scriptures. If “all” Scripture is thus valuable, then we are to esteem no part of the Old Testament as worthless. There is no portion of it, even now, which may not be fitted, in certain circumstances, to furnish us valuable lessons, and, consequently, no part of it which could be spared from the sacred canon.

Looking for the great main lines

Study of the Old Testament shall give us επανορθωσις meaning properly, a setting to rights, reparation, restoration, (from επανορθοω, to right up again, to restore) so we as ordinary folks can be restored to be part of God’s people. God has given the world a solution to evil, first by His Word and next by providing His only begotten son, Jesus (Jeshua), the Messiah. It was that Nazarene man who tried to explain the Words of his Father so that his fellow men could follow and understand it. He taught what is right, or what is required of men, in order that they may lead a holy life. In his teaching Jesus emphasised the importance of listening to the Words of God and to react properly on them. He also showed the world how careful we have to treat those precious words and how we should not go into niggling like the Pharisees could do. By studying the Bible we should avoid hairsplitting.

We do not have to pettifog with each other, but try to come to see the most important and big lines which can bring us to the saving Truth.

God has brought His Word to us by humans, so that they also could bring them over in a way humans can understand. After God had provided many people to speak in His name, His son had received the right to come forward as the mediator, of the New Covenant, between God and men, and was allowed to send out his disciples to continue bringing the Word of God.

  The living Body of Christ is at a unique time in history. Thanks to technology, internet, social/new media, mass production, smart phones, translation ministries, dramas, voice recordings the Holy Bible has never been more available to the church, and we have never been at a higher time of literacy either. Yet it raises the quandary then why at this time in history is the average Christian the most biblically illiterate?

  We must be careful in studying the scriptures for the sake of giving to others instead of desiring more of God for ourselves. This is particularly dangerous for the professional Christian worker who is under continued pressure to feed and teach His people.
